Permanent installation at Sofia Zoo
2020
Curated by Miroslav Yordanov
T
he “Primaformance” project took place in October 2020, in one of the inner premises of Macaca silenus species in the Sofia Zoo. The project is being implemented during the reconstruction of the premises of the primate sector in the zoo and was proposed by me and the curator Miroslav Yordanov to the management of the zoo.The Installation is permanently located in the space of the cage and is designed to function as a biotope for the inhabitants.
The spatial installation located in the cage forms a bitotopic environment for the inhabitants of the species …. and is the passive element in.
Wooden logs structure and metal chains, stretched towards each other and towards the peripheries of the cage, transform the space inhabited by these members of the Macaca silenus species, into artistic, contextually oriented installation with performative characteristics. The unusual interplay between contemporary artistic practices and the monkeys of the Old World, forms a specific, highly entropic, biotope environment in a closed system – a cage. The stretched metal chains form a net, which similar to a neural system transfers information about physical interaction with the spatial structure and defines the integrity of the artwork.
The glazing of the cage is the penetration area, the invisible bidirectional membrane of an informational interface, a window overlooking the scene of the performance. It is the area where the cage communicates with the spectator, the frame that marks the picture plane, a cut into the artistic “tissue”. Setups transformed in performance and vice versa, without choreography or directing, derived through the formula embedded in the structure of the spatial composition, stretched to the border of the interaction of a primal genome and an analytical creative process.

“Hoc est enim corpus meum” – a phrase with biblical origin in Latin, which in common translation reads “(For) this is my Body”. Words pronounced for thousands of years have passed beyond their direct meaning, beyond their marginality. Maglov summarizes the image simultaneously in a conceptual and radically plastic manner, using universal values specific to the generalized truths that have reached us trough a dead language. The installation contains a group of sculptural objects that can be viewed as a whole but also as separate works – essences.”
“The installation itself evolves around the problem of the boundary between the individual and the group, but it is only its social reading. Formally, the animal pack taking the gallery room, raises a lot of questions, overcomes a problematic boundary between plastic stylization and contemporary marking of the image, establishing a universal object, focusing on a dramatic phrase. The objects are partly filled with fleeting volume and at the same time they lack of mass, loaded with tension but also with fatigue.”

Bereaving identity, how this is affecting the process of contemplation? Is it that, the lack of identity brings universal qualities, opens the possibilities of how something or someone is perceived. Whether it is possible to think of the loss of identity in a similar light, whether it is the event that initiates the possibilities of general transformations. “The maiden unveiled” is a questioner, it is a formulation of an act, defining the range of possibilities, not a straight answer.

A short movie I made during my residence in Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France.
It was first presented on 8 January 2016.
No editing, cutting or any kind of processing, it is the raw footage shot at once.

timber construction, fluorescent lamps, nylon
size: 240 x 240 x 150 cm.
When I was working on this project, the main concern was to synthesise a system (medium), where the system itself is constructed of critical states. Intermediate condition, а state between “life” and “death”, between “on” and “off” and 0 and 1, state of constant contradiction.
The installation consists of an enclosed space made of PVC-covered timber panels, inside of it are positioned fluorescent lamps. A light-diffusing plastic sheet was positioned in front of the construction. By lowering the electric current, the fluorescent gas inside the glass pipes of the lamps, charge and discharge frequently, causing blinking and producing a very typical sound.

“Pagan rite” is a work built around contradiction and the result of the direct collision itself.
The process of creating the work involved various practices corresponding to the idea. The bronze casts, used for this work, are unique copies of each one. These bull and horse heads have collided/crushed to the steel drums in an act of a “pagan” ritual.

The interactive installation “probability space” is constructed of four identical old solid wood doors, which have been collected from an old factory located in the Sofia suburbs. The space defined by the doors has the deceptive qualities of a closed space, of a room without walls. It involves the spectator in the chain-reaction process of making decisions and taking actions that might seem identical but never are.

A sterile space. Objects. Chains. Border association. Self-identification. Provocative installation artwork, addressing issues of human <-> environment <-> society system. Self-identification is a core part of the experience of the spectator. The author and audience are in similar positions in perceiving NO SIGH. The work itself functions as a “process” a provocation that takes on a subjective emotion in the act of perception.
By setting up a “peculiar” space (object), an irritant, Maglov reaches the viewer at the level of the instinctual drives, increasing internal tension in the viewer.
